COL Robert (Rocky) Burrell was born and raised in Morgan City, Louisiana. He received his commission at Marion Military Institute in 1988. He graduated from Northeast Louisiana University in 1991 and earned a MBA from Auburn University in 1993. He entered the US Army in 1993 as an infantry officer. His initial assignment was at the Joint Security Area Demilitarize Zone (DMZ) Battalion in Pan Mun Jom, Korea. Subsequently he served at the 5th Ranger Training Battalion in Dahlonega, GA. Following the Infantry Officer Advanced Course he completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and then served in the 7th Special Forces Group – Airborne. As a detachment commander with 7th Special Forces Group (SFG) (A) he deployed to Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Barbados.

COL Burrell attended the Naval Postgraduate School in 2001-2002 and received a Masters in Defense Analysis-Special Operation Low Intensity Conflict (SOLIC). He then served as the Special Forces (SF) branch representative and SOLIC instructor at the United States Military Academy. In 2004, COL Burrell served with the Joint Special Operations Command as an operations officer in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Subsequently he was assigned as the Deputy Army Section Chief in the USMILGRP Bogota, Colombia. In 2007, he was assigned to US Army South, International Military Affairs Directorate. In 2009, COL Burrell served as the Army Section Chief in the USMILGP in San Salvador, El Salvador. In 2011, COL Burrell served as the Security Force Assistance Team OIC for 4th BDE-4th Infantry Division (ID). He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) VII-VIII where he served as an SFAT advisor and Task Force Commander (TF CDR). In 2013, COL Burrell was assigned as a special projects officer for North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and US, Northern Command (NORTHCOM) J5.   COL Burrell attended the US Air Force – Air War College. He currently serves as the Regional Affairs Directorate at US Army South.

COL Burrell is a graduate of the US Army Airborne, Ranger, Special Forces, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE), Security Force Assistance, Lone Range Surveillance Leaders, Bradley Commands and Spanish language courses.
