John Mitzel has over 39 years of federal, civil service experience in the areas of education, training, and human resource management. Mr. Mitzel has held senior leadership positions both within the United States Air Force and the United States Army. His career began as a guidance counselor at Grand Forks AFB and Spangdahlem AB, Germany. He also was an Air Force Education Services Officer at Spangdahlem and Wiesbaden AB in Germany and Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. For approximately 13 years he served as the Chief of Education and Training Division in the Air Force’s Air and Education Training Command and as a senior staff officer in the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, HQ USAF, Pentagon.
Upon moving to the US Army, he became the Chief of Human Resources for the Army’s Installation Management Command, West Region. In this capacity, he managed the civilian and military personnel, Army Continuing Education, the Army Substance Abuse and the Record Management Programs for all Army garrison personnel assigned to the 22 major installations west of the Mississippi.
Mr. Mitzel holds a MA degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Dakota and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the Air Force’s Air War College. He has completed postgraduate course work in Adult Education from Texas A&M University and the Institute for Management of Lifelong Learning at Harvard University. He is a graduate of the Department of Defense Leadership and Management Program and the Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Executive Institute. On two separate occasions he served as a senior instructor/facilitator in the Office of Secretary of Defense’s Executive Leadership Development Program.
